EDiTE Conference Volume: European Perspectives in Transformative Education

It is with great pleasure that we announce the edited conference volume, “European Perspectives in Transformative Education,” which is a result of the international conference, held in Wrocław, on June 19th–June 20th. The conference and this publication are an integral part of the European Doctorate in Teacher Education (EDiTE) project.

In this volume you will find both individually and collectively written papers by the EDiTE researchers that reflect the results of the first year of their research within the EDiTE framework. PART I of the volume contains three collectively elaborated analyses of the three components of the EDiTE theme, Transformative Teacher Learning for Better Student Learning within an Emerging European Context. These papers are based on a complex and challenging joint effort of international teams of EDiTE researchers, who over the course of several months carried on an internal survey, analysis, and discussion concerning the common understanding of the EDiTE research theme. In the PART II the authors were given freedom in choosing themes and co-authors of their papers. The effect is a rich mosaic of focus and scope of interests that aptly mirror the diversity of the EDiTE community.

EDiTE at the EERA Summer School 2017

EDiTE was present at the European Educational Research Association (EERA) Summer School on ‘Methods and Methodology in Educational Research’, co-organised by the Johannes Kepler University of Linz and the Federal Institute for Education Research, Innovation and Development of the Austrian School System (BIFIE), which took place from 10 – 14 July 2017 in Linz, Austria. EDiTE Researcher Vasileios Symeonidis participated in the activities and workshops of the summer school, presenting the methodology of his research on Europeanisation in teacher education. Moreover, Petr Novotný, EDiTE supervisor, acted as tutor on workshops related to student learning.

The Summer School included opportunities to network with researchers from around Europe and connect with the EERA Emerging Researchers’ Group (http://www.eera-ecer.de/networks/emerging-researchers/). During the lectures, various educational projects were presented to showcase the methodologies employed, while methodology workshops for participants included introduction to social network analysis, grounded theory, and focus groups. A study visit to the headquarters of BIFIE in Salzburg was organised, giving participants the opportunity to familiarise themselves with competence oriented education and outcome monitoring in Austria.

The EDiTE Summer School 2017 was held in Wroclaw, Poland and was organized by the team of the University of Lower Silesia. It took place from June 19 to 23, and was attended by roughly 60 participants, including EDiTE researchers, supervisors and representatives of the partner organizations as well as members of the Scientific Supervisory Board. This Summer School was also combined with the Mid-Term Review Meeting of the EU project officers. The organization of the summer school was entirely based on the feedback that was given after the last summer school in Brno in 2016. Therefore, the character of this year’s summer school was aspired to be highly interactive and geared towards presentation, supervision and guidance of the researchers on their way towards completing their doctoral dissertations.
Whereas the previous summer school was aimed at kick-starting the EDiTE community and presenting the various dissertation project ideas, this time the summer school functioned as a forum of displaying progress and receiving the necessary guidance to be able to plan the remaining time and finishing the dissertation. Hence, the EDiTE conference involved feedback and discussion on each presentation that was given, the EDiTE researchers were able to choose from seven methodological workshops that dealt with computer supported data analysis, triangulation and mixed methods, as well as experiential research, data analysis sessions and supervisory meetings. Moreover, time was allotted to the “supervision triangle” so that each researcher had the opportunity to meet together with supervisor and co-supervisor of extended discussion and reflection. Also, data analysis sessions took place in which the researchers enjoyed the attention of one supervisor together with up to two other researchers. Pressing questions and a fresh perspective on data, methods and interpretation paradigms were exchanged here.
Eventually, the researchers also had time to collaborate and socialize since the summer school was also intended to serve as a forum for building a strong sense of community and a joint vision for the future.

EDiTE Researchers participate at the 61st ICET World Assembly, 2017

The 61st ICET World Assembly was held in Masaryk University, Brno from 28th to 30th June. The conference was hosted by Faculty of Arts, Department of Educational Sciences with Dr. Roman Švaříček, supervisor to one of the EDiTE fellows, as the conference chair. The title of the conference was, “Re-thinking Teacher Professional Education: Using Research Findings for Better Learning”. The sub themes covered at the conference were:

  • Improving quality of learning
  • Teacher as Leaders of learning
  • Teacher Education and Professional Development
  • Teaching in Digital Era
  • Learning Communities, Partnerships and Network and
  • International Trends in Teacher Education.

Workshops were organized on how to make one’s research interesting as well as how to get it published. There were also round table sessions that addressed issues like internationalization in teacher education, teacher recruitment and retention issues, contemporary leaderships in teacher education, and teacher professional development in the 21st century. The key note sessions were Forty years a Teacher Educator: Lessons Learned from Reflective Practice, Transformative Professional Learning in Teacher Education: What, Why and How, and Types of Intergenerational Learning among Teachers. The key note sessions touched upon how important it is for the educators to learn from experience and reflection so one can be informed about their own practices. It also addressed information on the idea of transformative professional learning. The final key note session focused on types of Intergenerational learning and how intergenerational learning can contribute to learning amongst the teachers.

Teacher educators from various countries participated in the conference. Interesting knowledge, insights and findings were shared that drew lots of discussion and interaction. All the participants made enormous contributions to make ICET a remarkable learning community.

Three researchers from the European Doctorate in Teacher Educator (EDiTE) participated in the conference. Deisi Yunga, Dev Raj Paneru and Kinley Seden presented their research papers. The researchers expressed that the conference enriched them with knowledge, skills and values. Apart from presenting individual research, the researchers made an effort to inform the audience of EDiTE as a research community of transnational researchers, professionals and academics, its mission, vision and the main activities as a part of acknowledgement to Horizon 2020 project and its funders. More importantly it gave them the opportunity to network with educators from around the globe.

As part of the 61st ICET world Assembly, the exquisite Gala Dinner was organized for the assembly participants on 29th June. The event provided participants with yet another platform to interact and discuss various other issues besides their papers. The EDiTE researchers attended the Gala Night along with their supervisors.

The researchers had the privilege to experience the warmth of Czech culture and tradition. The cultural event displayed a variety of musical dances and performances. The EDiTE researchers along with other participants were mesmerized by the cultural performances. The dancers engaged the conference participants in a traditional Czech dance after their performances. The participants coming from all over the world were thrilled by the cultural dance and songs.

In addition, the local band played classic rock and pop songs from the 60s, 70s, 80s and 90s and made the participants nostalgic. It also gave them an unforgettable and entertaining night. The participants had a delightful and enjoyable night. Delicious meals were served. The event offered a wonderful memory for the participants.

 

Dick Howard

Open Lecture with prof. Dick Howard on “Searching for Marx – Then and Now”

On 9 May, 2017 EDiTE students at the University of Lower Silesia attended prof. Dick Howard’s open lecture with the title “Searching for Marx – Then and Now.” Dick Howard is Distinguished Professor Emeritus at Stony Brook University, received his PhD in philosophy from the University of Texas. He studied in Paris (with Paul Ricoeur) and Bonn (with Klaus Hartmann). He later worked with Claude Lefort, Cornelius Castoriadis and Jürgen Habermas. A participant in the civil rights and anti-war movements in the US, he was a student at Nanterre in 1968, and traveled thereafter throughout West and East Europe, becoming an early anti-totalitarian leftist.

In his lecture, prof. Dick Howard elaborated his concept of the differentiation between the political (framework where politics happen) and politics (place and practice for transformation) in order to locate his analyzis of the “new left”. The lecture was organized by the EDiTE programme and IISCE (International Institute for the Study of Culture and Education) and it was streamed on facebook. We highly recommend prof. Howard’s book “From Marx to Kant ” published by Palgrave Macmillan in 1985, where he analyzes the relation of philosophy and politics, and illustrates this by a reinterpretation of Kant, Hegel and Marx.

EDiTE Researchers at Freire Conference at the University of Gdansk

From April 26-28, 2017 six EDiTE researchers from the University of Lower Silesia made their way to Gdansk University (GU) in Poland where Prof. Maria Mendel hosted a unique conference on Freire Today: Educational Reconstructions in the Contemporary Social Context. Prof. Mendel, director of the Institute of Education at Gdansk University had invited a special guest for these days, Prof. Carmel Borg from the Department of Education Studies of the University of Malta, who has edited the only existing full-scale Freire Reader. His keynote lecture, in which he reflected on Freire’s renowned Pedagogy of the Oppressed, deeply impressed the researchers who commented that he combines experiences of an academic and in-school-practitioner perfectly. The conference days were a wonderful opportunity for each of the EDiTE researchers to present their own take on of Freire’s work and connect it with their area of expertise. Our presentations ranged from “The Grammar of Schooling as the Obstacle to Emancipation in Modern Schools” (Lucie Bucharova), to “Freire’s Solidarity and the Community of the Disabled” (Agnieszka Licznerska), “Growing the Polish Teacher Potato – The Case of Polish Teachers’ In Action on Facebook” (Beata Zwierzynska), “Two Natives and a Colorful Pile- Constituting the Norm in an Austrian Primary School” (Josefine Wagner), over “The Necessary Shift towards Democratic Practices”(Monika Rusnak), and “Anti-discrimination Education and Social Justice in Schools” (Ewa Stoecker). Furthermore, we benefitted from the very welcoming program that Prof. Mendel had planned for us. This included a walking tour through the Old Town of Gdansk and a guided visit to the European Solidarity Center which documents the Solidarnosc movement that started in the former Lenin dockyard of Gdansk in 1980 and eventually struggled successfully for the first free and democratic elections in Poland after World War II. Here, the poems “Nothing Twice” and “The Three Oddest Words” by Wislawa Szymborska, 1996 winner of the Nobel Prize in Literature, were recited to us and a truly inspiring trip thanks to Prof. Mendel and educational theorist at GU Prof. Tomasz Szkudlarek, came to an end. Ezra Howard

A lecture on Tennessee Education System

Teacher week also known as Tyden Ucitelstvi 2017 was marked from 24th to 28th April, 2017 at the Faculty of Arts, Department of Educational Sciences, Masaryk University. During this week on 26th April at 14:00 hour, Ezra Howard one of the recipient of Marie-Sklodowska-Curie grant under the European Doctorate in Teacher Education Programme delivered a talk on US Education particularly focusing on the state of Tennessee.

Mr. Howard’s lecture was focused on the vast and varied nature of the U.S. education system with specific focus on the state of Tennesse.

He presented the lecture with an interesting video that clearly captured the brief description of how education evolved in US over the times.  He also touched upon how funds are distributed over Federal, State and Local governments. He spoke about forms of schools, alternative forms of schools and different options available for the structure of schooling.

He said: Education is compulsory until the age of 16. After 16, if one wishes, one can discontinue the education with the awarding of General certificate.

Mr. Howard also touched upon policies such as No Child Left Behind, Race to the top, National Assessment Education Programme, and Every Student Succeed Acts.

Second National Partner Organization Meeting Within the EDiTE Project

The second national partner organization meeting within the EDiTE project took place on 25 April, 2017 at ELTE. This occasion was a fruitful opportunity for practitioners and researchers to brainstorm on specific activities for the internship period of Early Stage Researchers.

The Learning Teacher Workshop Conference

The Learning Teacher Workshop Conference was organized within the Learning Teacher research framework of the EU H2020 MSCA funded European Doctorate in Teacher Education (EDiTE) on 25 April, 2017. On this occasion participants could listen to the presentations of PhD students (four on Hungarian and four on English languages) at the Pedagogical and Psychological Faculty of the Eötvös Loránd University – ELTE (Budapest, Hungary). The underlying theme of the conference was teacher education and teachers’ learning, including:

  • the impact assessment study of an innovative school’s pedagogical programme;
  • adult learning models and the role of mentoring in learning management;
  • national teacher education programmes and the role of practice in these;
  • analysis of master teachers’ portfolio;
  • the role of leadership and organization in innovation;
  • the study of teachers’ learning in the context of professional learning;
  • Europeanisation in teacher education.

The conference was closed with an interactive discussion section between the participants and the presenters, and it could be considered as a professional meeting venue for Early Stage Researchers involved in the EDiTE project (Csilla Pesti, Helena Kovacs, Deisi Yunga, Vasileios Symeonidis), students of other PhD programmes from the Doctorate School of Education (ELTE), colleagues from the institution, as well as numerous partner organizations.

Open Lecture and Seminar with prof. Dave Hill and dr. Leena Robertson

From April 19-21, 2017 we had a lecture and two extremely inspiring seminars with professor Dave Hill and dr. Leena Robertson (Middlesex Universiry London) at University of Lower Silesia. Prof. Dave Hill presented a Marxist critique of neoliberalism with a special focus to education policies and we discussed his proposal: a socialist manifesto for education. Dr. Leena Robertson gave a presentation on “Education and Rights of Linguistic Minorities in Europe” and we learned in-depth about her Erasmus+ funded project “ROM-tels” which involves People to People Foundation in Romania and four collaborating universities: Newcastle University, (UK), Univerity of Montpellier (France), Helsinki University (Finland) and Middlesex University (UK). The project addresses educational challenges, such as Eastern European Traveller, including Roma pupils’ poor participation and persistently low achievement in education and the decline of home language use in primary classrooms as a pedagogic tool to raise the academic achievement of pupils whose home language(s) differs from the official language of schools. Both lectures were streamed on facebook: Dave Hill on “Critical Education” and Leena Robertson on “Education and Rights of Linguistic Minorities in Europe”. The lectures were organized by the EDiTE programme and IISCE (International Institute for the Study of Culture and Education).
