A Fresh Update to the Knowledge Horizons at Masaryk University

It is always good to update and expand methodological knowledge in doing research. The EDiTE Early Stage Researchers and their PhD colleagues from the Department of Educational Sciences had a fortunate opportunity to attend a methodological workshop organised by the Masaryk University on October 9 and 10, 2017.

The workshop was facilitated by Professor Angelika Paseka from the University of Hamburg and through their two-day journey the group has covered topics of school development and use of innovations in schools. In particular, the focus was an effective application of focus group discussions as a methodological approach and documentary method in data analysis. Part of the workshop also elaborated on possibilities of extracting metaphors from the participants of the focus groups and techniques of macroscopic and microscopic two-step data analyses. The most interesting detail of the workshop was the idea of five building block of learning, namely Irritations, Resistance, Community of Experience, Experimentation and Search for Language. This input created an intensive exchange of opinions among all participants.

Throughout the two days of workshop the sessions were implemented in an interactive way, in form of group activities and discussions which supported a holistic way of sharing and gaining knowledge. It comes without saying that this methodological workshop made a useful input for the EDiTE researchers as it broadened the horizons of their methodological knowledge and capabilities.

A lecture on Tennessee Education System

Teacher week also known as Tyden Ucitelstvi 2017 was marked from 24th to 28th April, 2017 at the Faculty of Arts, Department of Educational Sciences, Masaryk University. During this week on 26th April at 14:00 hour, Ezra Howard one of the recipient of Marie-Sklodowska-Curie grant under the European Doctorate in Teacher Education Programme delivered a talk on US Education particularly focusing on the state of Tennessee.

Mr. Howard’s lecture was focused on the vast and varied nature of the U.S. education system with specific focus on the state of Tennesse.

He presented the lecture with an interesting video that clearly captured the brief description of how education evolved in US over the times.  He also touched upon how funds are distributed over Federal, State and Local governments. He spoke about forms of schools, alternative forms of schools and different options available for the structure of schooling.

He said: Education is compulsory until the age of 16. After 16, if one wishes, one can discontinue the education with the awarding of General certificate.

Mr. Howard also touched upon policies such as No Child Left Behind, Race to the top, National Assessment Education Programme, and Every Student Succeed Acts.

A lecture on Education Systems in Bhutan, Nepal and Tennessee

Between the months of November, 2016 and February, 2017, Masaryk University organized an open lectures for interested students. The theme of the event revolved around the Education System of Bhutan, Nepal and Tennessee. The presenters were the three researchers who are the recipients of Marie-Sklodowska-Curie grant under the European Doctorate in Teacher Education Programme.

The opening lecture was on the Education System of Bhutan presented by Kinley Seden. The presentation mainly focused on Gross National Happiness inspiring education. Ms. Seden also touched on how modern education started in the country and some of the challeges that the education system is currently facing.

The next talk was delivered by Dev Raj Paneru on the Nepalese Education System. The talk highlighted some special cultural features about Nepal, the highest Himalayan habitat and its education in today’s context. The lecture mainly focused on philosophy, system, directions, and some genuine issues that all the stakeholders of education must be aware of in order to correct the directions that in other way should qualify to the theory of localization, a balancing approach for 21st century contexts.

The next lecture, yet to be held, will be presented by Ezra Howard and will focus on the vast and varied nature of the U.S. education system with specific focus on the state of Tennesse. The presenter will also focus on the future agenda under a Trump administration.

The purpose of the event was to allow open interactions amongst EDiTE researchers and local students. The three researchers proudly circulated posters advertizing their lecture and inviting students for the event accordingly. The students who attented the lecture found the lecture to be extremely engaging, interactive and informative. Videos were shown to make the sessions even more lively and focussed. Culinary delicacies from their countries were served and showcased to the partcipants.
